EU postal workers in liberalisation protests

Postal workers across the European Union downed their mailbags on Wednesday in protest against plans to open the region’s postal market to unfettered competition from 2009.

The proposal, to be discussed by EU ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday, would abolish the last remaining monopolies in the €90bn ($121bn, £61bn) mail market, and allow Deutsche Post, Royal Mail and other operators to compete in 27 national markets.
