I became an odour assessor 16 years ago. A friend worked in research at Unilever and I was looking for a part-time job. I always thought I had a good sense of smell and I did a sniff test and was accepted. Once you've been accepted, it takes six months of training.

On a typical morning, I assess panellists' natural odour - by putting my nose as close as possible to the armpit - and mark it out of five. Then we wash panellists with fragrance-free soap and apply the product whose effectiveness is being tested. In the afternoon, we assess again.
