France and UK in deal on EU goals

France and the UK are set to strike a bargain at a European Union summit on ­Friday under which each country will secure EU approval for a policy objective close to its heart.

According to diplomats in Brussels, the French will accept a British-inspired declaration about the economic benefits of globalisation, an initiative on which Gordon Brown, the prime minister, set his sights in October.
