JJB founder has millions frozen in Iceland

Dave Whelan has emerged as one of the thousands of depositors caught out by the Icelandic banking crisis, having had millions of pounds frozen in an account that he opened with Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander.

In 2007, the founder of JJB Sports and owner of Wigan Athletic Football Club sold his 29 per cent holding in the sportswear chain to Chris Ronnie, now chief executive of JJB, and Exista, an Icelandic investment company, for £190m.
