An illusion of democracy in war-torn Chechnya

Chechnya, the war-torn republic in southern Russia, will this weekend hold its first parliamentary elections since President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into the republic to crush separatists in 1999.

The vote is being portrayed by the Kremlin as the final stage in the stabilisation of this turbulent and mountainous region, following earlier presidential polls.
