US retailers hope for holiday surge

US consumers maintained their cautious mood over the post-Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend, with industry analysts on Sunday estimating total sales at the ritual start of the holiday shopping season only slightly up from last year.

A surge in the number of people heading for the stores was offset by a fall in individual spending, suggesting that shoppers were tightly focused on hunting out bargains both in stores and online to make their money go further.
