Raila Odinga, the Kenyan opposition leader, has called off a potentially incendiary rally planned for Tuesday as both sides in the country’s political crisis prepare the ground for mediation.

But Mr Odinga and president Mwai Kibaki, who won last month’s hotly disputed election, remain suspicious of each other and neither political leaders or diplomats have a clear idea of how the crisis can be resolved.
