Spending on cars leaves a hole in American pockets

Americans spent so much on marked-down cars and marked-up petrol last month that they had little money left for other purchases.

An impressive 1.8 per cent rise in retail sales in July was due entirely to spending on cars and fuel. Vehicle unit sales came close to a record at 20.9m annualised after Ford Motor and Chrysler followed General Motors, offering their employee discount rates to all customers.
