US apologises for Hungary Holocaust gold train robbery

The US government yesterday expressed regret for the 1945 looting by American soldiers of a train filled with valuables stolen from Hungarian Jews during the second world war.

A statement issued by the US Justice Department said Washington "regrets the improper conduct of certain of its military personnel and seeks in this settlement to provide meaningful assistance to . . . Hungarian Holocaust survivors".
