Howard pledges tough curbs on asylum seekers

Michael Howard will today commit the Conservatives to tough new controls on asylum seekers, promising to tear up Britain's international obligations and introduce annual limits on the number of immigrants if elected.

The Tories would pull Britain out of the international convention on refugees, put in place more than 50 years ago, as part of a radical shake-up of asylum and immigration policy, the Conservative leader is expected to say.
