Herman Van Rompuy is not in the world's premier league of politicians but the Belgian prime minister has earned respect for steering the country in difficult circumstances.

An economist by training, his public image is one of a composed behind-the-scenes mediator who reluctantly accepted the position of prime minister late last year to avoid plunging Belgium into yet another period of political uncertainty.
