Abdullahi Yusuf, Somalia’s embattled president, is close to resigning, his spokesman said on Wednesday, as his country spirals out of control and his own support evaporates.

The announcement came at the end of a month in which Mr Yusuf’s perceived obstinacy and resistance to compromise has led to his foreign military and diplomatic backers deserting him.
