Italy tries to cut Germany down to size

Germany's position as the European Union's biggest country is often a cause for envy, but now comes an Italian initiative that would cut the country down to size - by more than 7m people.

Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's prime minister, last week suggested reforms to the way the EU calculates population, a figure that determines how much power a country wields in Brussels.
