Tesco, the UK's biggest supermarket chain, yesterday said shoppers were ditching poultry for beef amid uncertainty about the cause of an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu on the Suffolk farm of Bernard Matthews, the turkey producer.

Poultry sales have dropped during the past few days, Tesco said. "There has been a slight dip and movements into other products suchas beef."
