When Viktor Yushchenko, the Ukrainian opposition leader, appeared before his supporters in central Kiev yesterday, his ravaged face filled the giant video screen relaying events to the huge crowds.

Although Ukrainians have grown used to seeing pictures of the damage done to Mr Yushchenko by a recent mysterious poisoning, an elderly woman in the audience gasped: "Oh, how terrible. He was so handsome."
