For a company used to promoting from within, the appointment of an outsider as chief executive for the first time highlights Unilever’s desire for change.

The arrival of Paul Polman will be quite a moment for the maker of Dove beauty products and Lipton tea. It was only in 2006 that the group hired its first outsider as chairman.
