Michael Page has reported a steep decline in profits as the carnage in the global jobs market continues to savage the recruitment industry.

With unemployment still rising, albeit at a slower pace, the UK’s second-largest recruiter said that it had cut its global workforce by a third – or 1,800 employees – in the past year.
