Lebanon leader inherits mixed legacy

The appointment of billionaire businessman Saad Hariri as Lebanese prime minister last weekend was greeted not only by opulent fireworks over Beirut but also by a stock market rally.

The Blom index is up 14 per cent since the election victory of Mr Hariri’s pro-western bloc last month, having risen 21 per cent in the year to date.
