United Drug buys ‘specials’ manufacturer

United Drug, Ireland’s largest pharmaceutical wholesaler, has bought The Specials Laboratory, a Northumberland manufacturer of made-to-order medicines known as “specials”, for £20.1m ($29.6m).

The Specials Laboratory, which makes medicines for retail pharmaceutical and hospital markets, has expanded substantially since it was founded in 1999 by business partners Fiona Cruickshank and Brian Dougherty.
