Lobbyists for elderly vow to push healthcare up US poll agenda

In spite of the focus on the war in Iraq no candidate in the US elections next year will be allowed to escape the thorny domestic issue of healthcare reform, according to the AARP, the lobby group representing elderly and retired Americans.

William Novelli, the AARP's chief executive, yesterday signalled a drive by the group and its 35m members to push healthcare, social security and pensions to the front of the election agenda.
