Verizon in talks to buy Alltel

Verizon Communications, the second-largest US telecommunications group, is in talks to acquire Alltel, the fifth-largest US mobile network operator, in a deal valued at about $27bn in cash and paper, according to people familiar with the discussions.

If completed, the deal would catapult Verizon Wireless, the joint venture between Verizon Communications and UK’s Vodafone, back into the number one slot.
