Contender Hain warns on risks of anti-terror plan

Labour party divisions over controversial Home Office counter-terrorism plans deepened yesterday with Peter Hain, the deputy leadership contender, warning that they risked alienating the Muslim community.

Speaking just days after John Reid, home secretary, warned that the UK might consider opting out of European human rights legislation, Mr Hain, Northern Ireland secretary, said the government had to be "very careful" not to create "the domestic equivalent of Guantánamo Bay".
