UN urges Russia to pull out of Georgia on time

The United Nations raised alarm at the weekend about continuing violence in Georgia and urged Russia to respect a deadline to withdraw its forces from the country by October 10.

In a hopeful sign, Russian troops dismantled a checkpoint on the border of the 20km-wide buffer zone they have occupied around breakaway South Ossetia since the end of the conflict with Georgia, and promised to remove two more on Monday.
