Efforts grow to legalise a vital section of workforce

Los Angeles, a city that was ruled by Spain and then Mexico until 1848, has an uneasy relationship with immigration.

Workers from Latin America play a vital role in driving the city's economy, taking hard, manual jobs that are often low-paid and lacking in benefits. Yet thousands of those workers are in Los Angeles illegally, living with the constant threat of deportation.
