Coal still fires China in spite of efforts on emissions

The Copenhagen talks on climate change could have become a diplomatic disaster for China. Now the biggest emitter of carbon in the world, the country was in danger a few years ago of being defined by the rapidly deteriorating pollution problems of filthy air and contaminated water.

China’s diplomats feared that they would become the main target for environmental groups, especially if the talks were to fail.
