Joe Biden, the US vice-president, landed in Pristina on Thursday to a hero’s welcome – the road from the airport lined with thousands of cheering schoolchildren waving the Stars and Stripes.

All around the capital of Kosovo, the Balkan breakaway state that declared independence with US backing last year, billboards showed a waving Mr Biden with the caption: “Welcome and thank you.”
