Iraqi political leaders were reported last night to be closing in on a last-minute deal in Baghdad that could avert a widespread boycott by the Sunni Arab minority of this Saturday's referendum on Iraq's proposed constitution.

A US official in Washington said a formal announcement was expected to be made today, following talks held at the home of Jalal Talabani, the Iraqi president.
