Transport: Sacrifice needed to bridge gap in funding

As recently as December last year, Scottish ministers were enthusiastic supporters of the Glasgow Airport Rail Link. Due to open before Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games in 2014, the project would have involved construction of a mile of new track to allow four trains an hour between the airport and central Glasgow.

However, on September 17, in the Scottish budget, John Swinney, Scotland’s finance secretary, announced plans for the new track – which would have cost around £210m ($344m) – were being scrapped.
