Spanish banks build ‘war chest’ of assets

Spanish banks are accumulating a “war chest” of assets that can be used as collateral to access European Central Bank credit in case the wholesale money markets remain closed this year, Spanish bankers say.

The huge expansion in mortgage credit in the country in recent years has been fuelled in part by the banking sector’s widespread use of mortgage-backed bond markets to fund lending growth – second in Europe only to the UK.
