Purnell pursues tough love for jobseekers

James Purnell on Monday vowed to “plough ahead” with welfare reforms that put tougher conditions on jobseekers in spite of expectations that unemployment will soar past 2m this week.

With job market conditions the bleakest for almost two decades, Mr Purnell rejected suggestions that the government should concentrate on helping those newly unemployed and give up on people who have been out of work for several years.
