Japan to allow US nuclear carrier in its waters

Japan will break its postwar nuclear taboo by allowing the US navy to station a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in one of its ports in a concession to Washington that could trigger fierce domestic controversy.

The US navy said the USS Kitty Hawk, currently stationed in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, would be decommissioned and replaced with a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in 2008.
