Traders who placed long spread bets on the stock markets back in March have been well rewarded for their boldness.

Back then, the economic signals were pretty bleak. Unemployment was rising fast and the FTSE 100 had dropped to its lowest point in six years. At the same time, house prices were falling fast and the Bank of England had just taken the extreme move of cutting the base interest rate to its lowest ever level.
