Tom DeLay, the powerful former Republican House leader, announced on Tuesday he would not seek re-election this year to the US House of Representatives.

Mr DeLay, who played a critical role in consolidating Republican control of Washington over the past decade, said he was stepping aside to avoid a bruising political fight in his Texas district that he might have lost.
