Balls blasts back in defence of Brown

Ed Balls, Gordon Brown’s closest lieutenant, launched a withering attack on the prime minister’s critics on Monday as feuding at the top of the Labour party became increasingly personal.

Mr Balls, the children’s secretary, questioned the honour of Frank Field, who led the backbench Labour revolt over the scrapping of the 10p tax band.
