Numbers decline but academic standards remain high

William Hulme's Grammar School in Manchester suffered a 14 per cent drop in rolls before announcing academy plans in 2006, according to figures from the government's own database of private school numbers.

Colston's Girls' School Academy in Bristol was hit by a 15 per cent slide in the four years before it declared plans to turn into a state school in 2007 - with numbers dropping from 429 to 366. Both schools are now academies.
