Brown calls for ‘spirit of national unity’

Gordon Brown called on Monday for a “spirit of national unity” as he defended the use of higher borrowing in response to the economic downturn.

In a speech to business leaders in London, the prime minister said: “We will and can allow borrowing to rise to help restore demand and to come to the aid of workers, businesses and homeowners.”
