Drugs watchdog demands tough powers

Fears that patients are at risk from counterfeit drugs have prompted the medicines watchdog to demand tougher powers to cut the number of distributors.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency is seeking the right to request the criminal records of people applying for licences to sell drugs, higher fees to allow it to vet applications, and a cap on the resale of drugs by pharmacies.
