FSA under pressure to restrict short-selling

The foundations of the modern British banking system had only been in place for three years before falling prices prompted England’s first ban on short-selling financial stocks in 1697.

Pressure is rising to introduce restrictions again, after short-sellers – who profit from falling share prices – were widely blamed for the plunging value of banks this week.
