Swiss adventurer unveils solar plane

A bold scheme to fly a solar powered aircraft around the world took shape on Friday as Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard unveiled a prototype at a former military aerodrome near Zurich.

The HB-SIA – the aeroplane’s registration – has the wingspan of a Boeing 747-400 but room for only one passenger in its tiny cockpit. It weighs about the same as an average passenger car.
