Private schools offer vocational subjects

Private schools have discovered a new niche market, taking advantage of their sometimes lavish facilities to offer vocational courses for less academic children – until recently the sole preserve of the state sector.

St Bede’s School in East Sussex offers qualifications in “horse care and riding”, using its 30-odd stables, as well as technical qualifications in “culinary skills”, “music technology” and sport, marketing head Sally Wellings said.
