Data highlight challenges faced by DPJ

An array of data released on Monday showed the challenge ahead for the Democratic Party of Japan as it seeks to shift the focus of Japan’s economy towards domestic consumption.

Industrial production recovered further in July, up by a seasonally-adjusted 1.9 per cent on the previous month. However, production was still 22.9 per cent lower than a year ago, and retail sales, real wages, and new housing starts similarly trailed their 2008 levels.
