These days the annual US Maritime Security Expo is a busy event. With homeland security heavyweights much in evidence it is hardly surprising. Speakers at the 2004 event included Asa Hutchinson, under-secretary for border and transportation security, and Rear Admiral Larry Hereth, US Coast Guard director of port security - just the sort of individuals companies would like to impress with the technologies they have developed to help secure US ports.
Among those that have managed to grab much of the attention of homeland security officials in recent years is Savi Technology, a privately owned, California based supply chain security company. Savi counts among its clients the US defence department and the UK defence ministry as well as shippers, manufacturers, retailers and ports and terminals operators.
