The looming recession will help Gordon Brown to win the next election, John Denham, the skills secretary, suggests.

Mr Denham says the prime minister’s handling of the banking crisis and economic downturn is helping the government to re-engage with voters after the distraction of the “noises off over the summer about the leadership”.
