Today, the Financial Times won two awards at the Harold Wincott Awards. Saskia Scholtes, capital markets correspondent, based in New York, won the award for Junior Journalist of the Year. The financial blog, FT Alphaville, won the award for online journalism.

”Saskia Scholtes’ achievements in financial journalism are particularly impressive given her age and complexity of the subject matter. Just 27 years old, Saskia has provided FT readers with in depth news and analysis of the world’s most important financial story,” said Chrystia Freeland, US managing editor.

Paul Murphy, editor of FT Alphaville, said: “The Wincott Awards are as prestigious as it gets in British financial journalism. The FT Alphaville team - Helen Thomas, Gwen Robinson, Sam Jones and Neil Hume - are rather proud to be named the inaugural winner in the online category. As for financial blogging - a relatively new form of financial journalism - we’re pleased to see that the Wincott Foundation trustees ‘get it’.”

The award for online journalism is a new category which was introduced this year and replaces the flagship Business Journal award. The online journalism award recognises work by an individual or a publication.

Previous award winners from the Financial Times include Gillian Tett, who was named Senior Financial Journalist in 2007; Martin Dickson, Senior Financial Journalist in 2005; Isabel Berwick, Personal Financial Journalist in 2005 and Barney Jopson, Young Financial Journalist in 2004.

FT Alphaville has also been shortlisted for the 2008 Webby Awards in the Blog – Business category. The winners will be announced on May 6th and the awards will be presented at the Webby Awards celebration from June 8th to June 10th 2008.
