Lafarge and Saint Gobain, two of France’s biggest construction materials companies, announced issued rights issues of €1.5bn ($1.9bn) each to shore up their balance sheets, underlining the deteriorating global outlook for construction.
Saint Gobain’s announcement took the market by surprise because it also warned that 2009 would be “extremely challenging”. Saint Gobain’s shares closed 15 per cent lower at €23.80.
