Turkey declined to offer any assurances yesterday that its military incursion into northern Iraq would end quickly, despite US calls for the operation to be limited.

George W. Bush, US president, stepped up pressure amid Washington's concerns that the Turkish action against Kurdish PKK rebels could degenerate into a clash with the Kurdish regional government in northern Iraq. Both Turkey and the regional authority are close US allies.
