Israeli tank fire killed at least 30 Palestinians at a United Nations school in Gaza on Tuesday as Condoleezza Rice, US secretary of state, was set to join United Nations efforts to end the fighting.

State Department officials said Ms Rice was due to attend a scheduled meeting of the UN Security Council and to meet Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, and Ali Babacan, the Turkish foreign minister, along with Arab ministers, the State Department said.
