Government stimulus gives China car sales surprise boost

Chinese vehicle sales grew unexpectedly strongly last month as consumers reacted to government efforts to stimulate car purchases, but auto analysts said that the figures probably did not indicate a recovery in the sluggish Chinese car market.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said that Chinese sales of cars and light commercial vehicles rose to 610,000 in January, up 4.4 per cent from December last year.
