Australia to guarantee state borrowings

Canberra will guarantee the borrowings of Australia’s state and territory governments that have faced difficulties raising finance during the global credit squeeze.

“Like bond markets around the world, state government bond markets have been hit hard by the global recession,” Wayne Swan, Australia’s treasurer, said on Wednesday. He added that situation had threatened the ability of the regional governments to back important infrastructure projects.
