Spending drop hits pound

Sterling lost ground on Thursday after a sharp fall in UK consumer spending heightened fears that the country was headed into a recession.

Figures showed UK retail sales dropped by 3.9 per cent in June, far worse than expectations for a 2.6 per-cent drop and cancelling out the surprise jump in spending recorded in May.
